What NSF, USP, and Informed Choice Certifications Actually Certify

"Third-party tested" gets stamped on supplement bottles as if it's one thing. It isn't. We broke down what each real certification program actually checks — and confirmed that none of them verify that an ingredient works as marketed.

Supplements aren't pre-approved by the FDA before they hit shelves the way prescription drugs are, which is exactly why third-party certification marks exist — they're a private-sector attempt to fill part of that gap. But "certified" isn't one standard. NSF alone runs at least three different programs that get shortened to "NSF certified" in marketing copy, and USP and Informed Sport/Informed Choice each check for something different again. We read through what each program's own documentation says it actually tests, so the differences are clear before you see a badge on a label.

The Bottom Line

Every certification covered here does real, verifiable work — auditing manufacturing facilities, confirming label accuracy, or screening for banned/contaminant substances. None of them confirm that the supplement's marketed benefit is real or clinically effective. A "certified" badge is a quality-and-safety signal, not a proof-it-works signal, and the specific badge matters: a plain NSF/GMP facility registration checks something meaningfully narrower than NSF Certified for Sport.

NSF: three different marks, three different scopes

NSF International runs multiple, separate certification programs, and they get conflated constantly:

  • NSF GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) registration applies to the manufacturing facility, not a specific product. It's an on-site audit confirming the plant has proper methods, equipment, and quality-control systems in place under federal manufacturing regulations. It does not involve testing the finished product's contents.
  • NSF/ANSI 173 product certification (sometimes called "NSF Contents Certified") applies to a specific product and verifies that what's on the label matches what's in the bottle, and that the product doesn't contain unacceptable levels of specified contaminants.
  • NSF Certified for Sport is the narrowest and most rigorous of the three. To qualify, a product must already be NSF Contents Certified and made in an NSF GMP facility, and it additionally undergoes lot testing for more than 290 substances banned by major athletic organizations — stimulants, steroids, diuretics, masking agents, and similar compounds. NSF markets this as "lot-by-lot" testing, though by the program's own description the exact testing frequency for a given product can range from occasional lots up to every lot, depending on the arrangement with that manufacturer — athletes and other drug-tested professionals are advised to verify the specific lot number in NSF's database rather than assume every bottle was individually tested. It's the mark recognized by leagues including the NFL, MLB, and PGA specifically because of that banned-substance screening.[1]

The practical confusion: a bottle that says "NSF" somewhere on it could mean any of these three very different things, and only the "Certified for Sport" version means the product was screened for banned athletic substances.

USP Verified: the label-accuracy specialist

The U.S. Pharmacopeia's Verified Mark is a separate organization and a separate standard from NSF. According to USP's own program description, the Verified Mark confirms four specific things: the product contains the ingredients listed on the label, in the declared strength and amounts; it doesn't contain harmful levels of specified contaminants such as heavy metals or pesticides; it was made in a facility that complies with FDA Good Manufacturing Practice requirements; and it will actually break down and release its ingredients within a specified time (a dissolution test, not just an ingredient-list check). Verification recurs annually rather than being a one-time check.[2]

What USP's own materials do not claim is that a Verified product's ingredients produce the health benefit implied by the label. Label accuracy and manufacturing quality are real, meaningful things to confirm — but they're a different question from "does this ingredient, at this dose, do what the marketing says it does."

Informed Sport vs. Informed Choice: same lab, different testing frequency

These two programs are run by the same organization (LGC's sports-science testing division) and use the same accredited lab methods to screen for more than 285 banned or contaminant substances, but they differ in a way that matters if you're relying on the badge for a specific product batch:

  • Informed Sport tests every single batch of a certified product before it's released to market — every flavor, every production run.
  • Informed Choice uses ongoing retail blind-testing instead of testing every batch: the program buys finished products off shelves and tests a minimum number of batches per year (cited by the program as at least twelve lots annually), which means a specific bottle in your hand was not necessarily itself tested.[3]

Informed Sport is generally aimed at elite or drug-tested athletes and military personnel, where a single contaminated batch can end a career; Informed Choice is aimed more broadly at safety-conscious consumers who aren't subject to that level of individual testing risk. Neither program — by its own published scope — verifies that the product's advertised benefit is real. Both are exclusively about screening for what shouldn't be there, not confirming what's claimed to work.

The common thread: quality assurance is not efficacy proof

Every program above is, at its core, answering some version of "is this product what it says it is, and is it free of things that shouldn't be in it." That's genuinely valuable — undisclosed contamination and label inaccuracy are real, documented problems in the supplement industry, and a rigorous badge is real evidence a company invested in third-party oversight. But none of these certifications run clinical trials on the finished product or confirm that the certified ingredient produces the specific outcome used to market it. A protein powder can be NSF Certified for Sport and accurately labeled and still be sold with benefit claims that go well beyond what research on its ingredients supports. The certification and the marketing claim are two separate things, checked by two separate processes — and only one of them has an independent auditor behind it.

How to read a certification badge in practice

When you see a certification mark, it's worth asking which specific program it is (not just "NSF" or "third-party tested," but which NSF program, specifically), what it covers (facility vs. finished product, one-time audit vs. ongoing testing, contaminants vs. banned substances vs. label accuracy), and what it doesn't cover — which, across every program here, includes whether the ingredient works as advertised. A legitimate certification is a real point in a product's favor. It just isn't the same claim as "this supplement is effective," and treating it as interchangeable proof of that is a step the certifying bodies themselves don't take.
